In the fall of 2019, SJR State’s College-project Vikings Days of Service was launched. With this project, SJR State made a commitment to provide members of our campus community with two opportunities each year to engage and serve within our three counties.
St. Johns River State College facilitates two college-wide service days each academic year. One college-wide event, Vikings Fall into Service, will be scheduled on the Friday closest to September 11 and another college-wide event, Vikings Spring into Service, will be scheduled the Friday prior to the three-day Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend.
The purpose of the Vikings Days of Service is to:
In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance under bipartisan federal law, as an annual and forward-looking tribute to the events of 9/11 and those who rose up in service in response. SJR State will celebrate the September 11th National Day of Service on a Friday near September 11.
In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community." The MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – we have been challenged to, “Make it a day on, not a day off." SJR State will celebrate the MLK Day of Service the Friday following the three-day Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend.
